The Stag should have been a fantastic touring car. It had great looks, even with the roll-over hoop, brisk performance, a strong Triumph image...but a terrible engine. Instead of raiding the Leyland parts bin for the proven Rover V8 unit, two Triumph dolomite 1500 engines were grafted together. Problems with over-heating and failure were all too common and the car struggled lamely on. These problems are now sorted by the classic car movement and this now makes a superb car...but if only..
