The TR7 was not well received by the TR purists. It was too controversial with it's wedge styling, didn't have enough power and lacked an open top alternative. Triumph guessed wrong that the US would ban convertibles and were caught out. By the time the drop top arrived the TR7 story was nearly over, it turned out to be a more well-liked car but by then Triumph were already the poor relation in the British Leyland empire and about to disappear.
